  • What does Up mean?
Heat transfer coefficient only for one panel (filling).
  • What is Uw?
Heat transfer coefficients of the window component including glazing are usually calculated according to DIN 10077-1. Uw = U window - the U value of the entire window It includes the values for the window frame and the glazing. A low U-value for windows and doors is particularly important because it allows energy costs to be saved. If you pay attention to the different insulation values of materials and their optimum composition when you buy them, you can save yourself the annoying extra costs for heating later on.
  • What is the purpose of ventilation?
The planned ventilation of buildings aims to create a hygienic indoor climate, prevent structural damage and reduce heat loss. The ventilation of residential buildings can be achieved by free / natural ventilation or fan-supported/mechanical ventilation.
  • What is hidden behind the term "warm edge"?
Traditionally, spacers made of aluminium or galvanised steel are used for insulating glass. However, these create thermal bridges due to their thermal conductivity. Spacers with low thermal conductivity (low Psi-value, heat-relevant values) such as those made of plastic or stainless steel are therefore used to reduce heat loss in the edge area. The UW value (heat transfer coefficient of the window, heat-relevant values) can thus be improved by approx. 0.1 W/m²K. In addition, condensation in the edge area is avoided. In the case of multiple glazing, the warm edge is a spacer in the transition area from the glass to the frame (edge seal), which keeps the individual glass panes permanently at a distance and is made of a material with very low thermal conductivity. Originally, the spacer was made of aluminium, which, however, has a high thermal conductivity and thus causes heat loss in the edge area of the glazing. Increased requirements for energy efficiency have led to the development of spacers made of highly insulating plastic, which is characterised by very low thermal conductivity. The use of the new material resulted in an increase in temperature at the inner edge of the window, which led to the name "warm edge" being coined.
  • What is Xenon filling?
Whereas the space between the panes of windows used to be filled only with air, the noble gas xenon is now standard in modern components. Xenon is an inert chemical element that belongs to the group of noble gases. Windows with multiple glazing use argon as a filler between the panes of glass, which increases the thermal insulation by about 10 % compared to dry air as a filler. The optimum gap between panes with xenon is 8 mm.

Welcome to the ENERsign® U-Value window configurator:

The U-value window is also called heat transfer coefficient and according to the standard DIN EN 10077 it indicates the amount of thermal energy lost through a window to the outside.

The U-value window is calculated using the formula W/(m²K), i.e. watts per square metre and Kelvin. This value refers to the entire window and defines the amount of energy per unit of time that flows through an area of one square meter when the air temperature on both sides differs by one Kelvin. The lower this value is, the less energy or heat the window emits.
